Statement of Significance

The place has significance as part of the original Stirling Estate, and its associations with Maidments. The home is a fine example of the period of which there are few in the Capel area.

Physical Description

First house site opposite existing, 2nd existing, 3rd west of the first house.

History

In c1855, large sections of Stirling's Estate were leased to W.J. Roberts and John Scott, and small sections were sublet to younger members of those families. In 1896, William Charles Maidment was a cattle trader working between South Australia and WA when he bought a consignment of horses to Will Ramsay at Minninup. His wife Bessie had been recommended to live near the coast, and in 1907, Maidment bought 640 acres of the former 'Old Capel Farm' (WJ Roberts) from Ted Lang. Maidment renamed the property Peringa and moved into the new (2nd) house in 1908. He bred horses for remounts for the Indian army and had a stud stallion. In 1932, Ron Maidment married Hilda Roberts at Stratham, and he took over his father's lease opposite Peringa, building a cottage called Penola. Peter and Roberta Daley bought the place from the Maidment family. The vets were also horse enthusiasts, and they established a veterinary clinic and kennels on the property. WA competitions of camp drafting trials are conducted at the property, and the cross country course is recognised by the Equestrian Federation of Australia as part of the National circuit.
