Statement of Significance

The place has aesthetic value for its use of classical architectural detailing. The heavy masonry shell of the building anchors the corner and is a landmark on Boulder Road.

Physical Description

A single-storey building designed in the Federation Georgian style, c. 1840 - c. 1890, and built to the building line of Boulder Road and Whitlock Street. The building's entrance is at the building's truncation. The walls terminate at a rendered parapet. Rendered quoin work highlights the large double-hung sash windows to the facades. The building has been extended down Whitlock Street in matching style. The heavy masonry shell of the building anchors the corner. A verandah, if on the original building, has been removed and the interior has been altered.

History

In the 1920s, the Halfway Hotel, roughly opposite the Cruickshank Sports Oval, was kind of 'no man's land' between Kalgoorlie and Boulder. The early industries were relegated here, a location outside the main housing areas of Kalgoorlie and Boulder. The Halfway Hotel was named after the Halfway Station on the loopline; where three sections of road between Kalgoorlie and Boulder are located: Boulder Road, Federal Road, and Lane Street (Webb, 1993: 874).
