The place has some interest as a modestly detailed Federation Free Classical style of commercial building. The place reflects the expansion and development of residential and commercial buildings on the city fringes during the rapid population increase of the 1890s gold boom and the early years of the twentieth century. The place is representative as an example of a modest/substantial residential/commercial building dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Single storey row of three shops with rendered parapet to street and cantilevered awning. Pressed metal lining on underside of awning. Facade incorporates large metal frame shop windows and re-entrant doors.
In 1909 and 1919 Shing Lee's laundry is listed for No. 259, and a butcher shop for No. 261. over the years, the building continued to be used for commercial purposes.
High level of integrity. Medium level of authenticity as original form is intact but shopfront details have been altered. Original tiles below sill level remain only on No. 259.
