Statement of Significance

The site represents an association with early settlers and a way of life.

History

J. S. Roe first recorded the lake in 1848. Pastoralists used the lake area, and Michael Brown of Narrogin was known to be in the region. Most of the first settlement in the Kondinin area occurred around the lake in the early 1900s. Early maps of the lake show it as 'common'. However, it was too far from the town, and cut off by farming land, to enable it to function as a 'common'. In 1931, an Aquatic carnival was held at the lake. 1942 floods, and in 1945 and 1946, the full lake provided a venue for a bathing beauty contest to raise money for the Nurses Quarters at the Kondinin Hospital. The shores of the lake, have provided a recreational venue over the years, particularly when the lake is full, and boating and water activities take place.
