The place is a good example of an attached pair of residences dating from the period of expansion of Fremantle in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Duplex 19-21 Tuckfield Street is a single storey building with rendered walls and a zincalume hipped roof. There is a dropped tiled verandah roof supported by ionic columns and a masonry balustrade. There are timber framed casement windows either side of a fixed pane window to the front elevation. There is a low rendered masonry fence to the front boundary line.
Two cottages were erected on the lot in 1888 for James Gilchrist.
