The place is a rare example in Perth of a late 1930s, multi-storey, inner-city residential development. The place is a fine example of Inter-War Commercial Palazzo style. The massive, grand, form of the place is a city landmark, and specifically makes an important contribution to the streetscape of Sherwood Court and The Esplanade. The apartment building is valued by the community for the prestigious calibre and diversity of its occupants.
Large multi-storied apartment building with symmetrical stone facade and simplified classical idioms.
The building was constructed in 1937 by the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society. The design was prepared by Melbourne architects Hennessy, Hennessy and Company with Perth architect Reginald Summerhayes. The construction of the Lawson Flats was a key part of an intensive building program which signalled that the building industry in Perth had recovered from the economic depression in the first half of the 1930s. The building included a restaurant, laundry and caretaker’s flat on the ground floor. The Perth Club was located on the first and second floors, which was then occupied by the Karrakatta Club, a private women’s club. The other floors comprised of residential flats.
High level of integrity as it continues to be used for its purposes. High level of authenticity as the building retains original external and internal detailing.
