Statement of Significance

The Grass Valley Post Office is of cultural heritage significance for the following reasons: The place is associated with the development of postal and telecommunication services in Grass Valley and the broader Northam Shire. Level of Significance: Moderate

Physical Description

Timber framed corrugated steel clad open shed structure housing a series of post boxes for individuals located to the south of Carter Street. An Australia Post Box is located close to the street. A timber post and rail fence connects to the utilitarian style structure and continues along part of the north boundary of the property. A U- shape grey gravel driveway loops around a grassed area containing the post box structure and a single tree. A larger farm shed is located to the south of the loop driveway.

History

The current Grass Valley post office at Lot 8, 14 Carter St, Grass Valley was opened in 1986. The former post office was at Lot 6, 10 Carter St, Corner of George Street and operated from approximately 1906 through until 1986. The telephone exchange at the rear of this property is still in operation. Theme: Mail Services
