117 Throssell Street, Collie, a two-storey brick and iron hotel constructed in about 1910 has cultural heritage significance as one of the two original hotels in Collie. It has aesthetic value as a good example of a hotel constructed in the Federation Filigree style and makes a positive contribution to the streetscape of Collie. It has social and historic value as a hotel which has been in continuous operation since its construction, providing an important social venue for generations and contributing to the community’s sense of place.
The Victoria Hotel is a two storey brick and iron hotel built in 1900 in the Federation Filigree style of architecture. It has a simple parapet with decorative centre detail, and four balled decorations (one broken), and a bull nose verandah roof to the upper storey with timber balustrade. There is a verandah over the pavement supported by square timber posts on concrete bases, with simple timber brackets and timber fretwork. The façade is render/painted brick. There are arched heads with moulded plaster detailing over doors and window heads. Windows and doors have top lights; some of which are either painted over or covered. The side walls are red face brick. From Mungalup Road the hipped corrugated iron roof and a red brick chimney are visible.
In 1897 JC Cox applied for, and was granted, a wine and beer license for premises in Collie that had cost over £500 to construct. The application was opposed by Mr Thomas Carrigg of the Collefields Hotel. In June 1898, a publican’s license was granted to John Charles Cox ‘the proprietor of premises on the Collie Coalfield for which he holds a wine and beer license’. In May 1899, reference is made to Brook’s Victoria Hotel. The Victoria Hotel first appears in the Post Office Directories in 1900. In 1900 and 1901 Reginald Webb is recorded as the licensee although the licence was transferred from Webb to Harold John Robinson in 1900. The Victoria Hotel was sold in December 1902 to Mr Hobart ‘at a satisfactory figure’. In March 1903, PC Hobart was granted a licence for his ‘extended premises at the Victoria Hotel’. By 1906 JC Braidwood is the licensee. In 1907 Braidwood took over the Gordon’s Hotel in Bunbury. WE Naughton is listed from 1908 to 1912 and AR Richardson from 1913 to 1918 and WA Richardson for the next two years. EE Cox (also Cocks) is listed from 1922 until 1925, followed by Solomon and Mrs Bercove, Thomas Mathieson, Gunnell & Humphries and Mrs E Wilson until 1932. In 1933 AE Watson is listed on his own account with both Watson and G Connell listed the next year. Connell only is listed in 1935 and 1936. W Miles is the occupant from 1937 to 1939. EW Cocks is then listed from 1940 until the Post Office Directory records cease in 1949. In 2015, the Victoria Hotel continues to operate as a hotel and is known as ‘The Vic’.
