02174 East Perth Primary School (fmr)
The particular vernacular design of the Main Building and the simple utilitarian design of the Infants School Building. The place has historical significance as the government school for the former East Perth residential district. The place has a close association with Hillson Beasley, the Government Architect. The place is socially significant because of its association with families of a former residential quarter of the city. The place is representative of a Government School dating from the turn of the century.
A single storied brick building with terracotta tiled gabled roof constructed in stages to the design of the government. The building now comprising a central space and fourteen former classrooms and service rooms.
In 1894 the property was acquired for the Education Department. The school opened in 1895 and consisted of two classrooms, teacher’s room, cloak room and verandah. This is now the central and eastern parts of the current building. By 1899 the number of students was 307 which exceeded the number the school could accommodate. New classrooms were added to the western side and a large classroom was divided to provide more space. The school was extended again in 1902 to accommodate more students. Further additions were completed in the 1910s. In 1946 numbers had dropped, and by the 1970s it was proposed to close the school due to a lack of numbers. The school was closed in 1975. The building was used as office space by the Education Department. The building continues to be used as offices for private businesses.
Low level of integrity. Low level of authenticity as it is intact with some alterations.
