Historic - Maudie Eldridge had this building built as a boarding house. She ran the first store in Ongerup which consisted of general store, post office, telegraph office and tea rooms. Aesthetic - the building has formed part of the Ongerup streetscape since around 1919. Social - the banking facility for the people of the Ongerup district.
This is weatherboard single storey construction with a tin roof.
Miss Maudie Eldridge, who with her mother ran the first store in Ongerup, married a local farmer, Cecil Connell. The store was built in 1917 by an Albany builder Bob White. A boarding house was also built next door. This building had been used as a doctor's consulting room prior to the Agricultural Bank purchasing the building in 1954 (now Bankwest).
