Statement of Significance

Landmark seaside guesthouse built between 1908-15 by Mr G. H. West a Cottesloe councillor.

Site of The Hostel Manly, The building has been demolished and replaced by modern flats etc.

History

In 1905 the land was owned by H.D. Holmes. In 1908 by Mr G.H. West. Seaside guesthouse built between 1908-15 by Mr G. H. West It had several additions made over the years. It was sold in 1923 to a Mr Melvin who added an extra wing and shops. He still owned it in 1936 when his tennant applied for a hotel licence. It was a favourite retreat of country people. During the second Worid War it was a billet for the American sen/icemen and evacuees from Britain. In 1967 it was owned by J. Baker and in need of reconstruction. This dragged on for some years and eventually ...ats of being condemmed bought a demolition request to redevelop the site. The order was issued in May 1970.
