Statement of Significance

Part of the streetscape at the bottom of John Street in a heritage precinct. Part of the gold boom s architecture of this seaside suburb.

Physical Description

Edwardian Filigree bungalow built beore 1901 with a steeply hipped tiled roof with corbelled chimney stacks. Tuckpointed redbrick with a verandah to three sides of the south facing section on the triangular block. A string course of cream render is at window sill height. The verandah posts are square. The frieze is narrow with square section slats. Cutout fretted brackets. The verandah railing also has square section balusters beneath the handrail. The verandah floors are wood. The skirting is of slats. The front door is wood with side lights of stained glass on each side. The fences are new. There is a modern brick wall to the rear but there does not appear to be any additions to the skillion.

History

A house was on this site in 1901. J. W. Blackwell was living there in 1903. In 1905 it was sold by Mortimer McFarlane of Bunning Bros, merchant, to James King. In 1908 it was described in the rate books as brick owned by James King. In 1915 PO directories he is listed as orchardist. He was the first Mayor of Claremont and later first manager of the Eureka Flour Mill. The house behind was Thorbury Mental Hospital in 1903 & 1905 RW Forster locos' employee home.
