The place has aesthetic and historic significance as an example of an attached pair of stone cottages in central Fremantle constructed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and representing the typical living conditions of the townspeople at that period. The building is not highly intact and recent fabric is not significant.
Duplex 2-4 Knutsford Street is a pair of single storey residences constructed of stone with brick quoining to door and window openings and corners. Roof is gabled and clad with zincalume with a dropped zincalume clad verandah roof supported by timber posts and metal lace work brackets and frieze (probably not original). No 2 has a timber addition to the left side of the building. No. 4 has a weatherboard additional storey. The timber and glass paneled main entrance door has a leadlight fanlight (probably not original).
Duplex 2-4 Knutsford Street was built c1902. Rear extensions were constructed in 1988 at which time Overman & Zuideveld, Architects completed a photographic record. Currently (2002), residential.
