Duplex, formerly 47-49 Hampton Rd, now 7/13-8/13 Stevens Street, is a single storey limestone and iron duplex dating from the 1920s. It is a fine example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is historically significant as a typical workers' house in the Fremantle area, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It has social and historic significance as part of the former Skye Nursing Home.
Duplex, 7/13-8/13 Stevens Street (formerly 47-49 Hampton Road) is a single storey, limestone and iron duplex designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with red brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron/zincalume. Each duplex has a rendered corbelled chimney evident. Decorative vents are visible between the roof and verandah. The façade of each duplex is symmetrical with a central front door with toplight flanked on either side by timber framed windows. The verandah has a separate dropped corrugated iron roof supported by timber posts and a timber balustrade.
Stevens Street was originally known as Stephen street. In 1978 the Duplex, 7/13-8/13 Stevens Street, previously known as 47- 49 Hampton Road, was incorporated into the Skye Nursing Home in Stevens Street and access from Hampton Road was blocked off. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). High degree of authenticity with much original fabric remaining. (These statements based on street survey only).
Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
