Physical Description

The integrity of the tree was damaged in the late 1960's when an electricity cable was run through the middle of its foliage. This continues to require pruning by Western Power.

History

It appears that this tree was planted around 1840 and has historical significance in that it is the oldest known trace of european settlement in the Bayswater Area. It is difficult to determine the exact date of planting. The Roads Board Minutes of 1917 state that it was planted 80 years previously by Mrs Whalen of Guildford. The Bayswater Community News in 1970 reported that the tree was planted in 1850. Neither of these reports has been substantiated and no reasons have been given for its planting. In 1885, a large olive tree was noted by purchasers of land in the area, which seems to indicate that 1840-50 is a reasonable estimation of the planting date. It appears that Mr Whalen of Guildford was handling the Whatley's affairs during this period, and it is likely that he paid occasional visits to the area. A plaque was erected underneath the tree as part of the 1988 Bicentennial Celebrations. This plaque indicates that church services were held next to the tree prior to the construction of the first church in the area. In 1917, the Public Works Department presented the Bayswater Road Board with an ink stand carved from the wood of branches cut from the tree. This item still sits on the Council's meeting table.
