Statement of Significance

Craig’s Building has social, aesthetic and historical heritage significance. It is a fine example of early commercial architecture. It was built of local materials during Denmark’s transition period from a timber town to Group Settlement. The building has been particularly robust and experienced a number of occupancies reflective of the demands of the community. These shops were originally used as a grocer, tearooms and drapery from the 1920s. By 2010 the building had become a doctors’ surgery.

Physical Description

Craig’s Building is a timber framed, twin gabled, single storey building with the original verandah facing Strickland Street.

History

It is an example of early pioneer commercial architecture. Pressed tin wall panelling still remains on walls in both ‘shops’. Bay windows used for displays for earlier businesses still hold their integrity.
