It was begun in 1851 after Capt. Henderson despaired of finding sufficient accommodation in Fremantle to house his prison warders economically. The houses were built with convict labour but designed by Henderson. This row was meant for warders with large families, but in the event as soon as the row was completed two families moved. They each had a room on the ground floor and one above because Henderson had provided fireplaces only on the ground floor. Such crowded living spaces were unsatisfactory and fights and quarrels soon broke out between the families. Henderson learned from this error and not only provided extra cooking places in this block but also put fireplaces on both floors of the other houses he built for his warders. The houses now accommodate only one family apiece. They were repaired while under prison control and were acquired by Homeswest in 1991.
