The place has aesthetic significance as a Federation Free Classical corner shop constructed in 1908. It has historic significance as a commercial building constructed during the period of economic affluence and increased development that followed the gold boom. The place has social value for continuity of use as a wine merchant/liquor outlet and provides a sense of place for West Perth residents.
Two storey commercial building with corner pediment and decorative battlement parapet with sphere on pedestrians. Modifications to street level. Awning replaces original verandah.
West Perth developed as suburban residential area in the late 1890s. From its inception it had the characteristics of a quality neighbourhood. The West Perth end of Hay Street was predominately prestigious homes, taking advantage of Hay Street’s proximity to the city and King’s Park (then known as Perth Park). The elevated location provided healthy site drainage as well as cooling breezes and views over the city and hills. The area had social status already associated with addresses in nearby Mount Street and access to the city's piped water system. The homes built in West Perth from the early 1900s included prestigious mansions built in prominent locations and smaller working class cottages in the narrower back streets and towards the northern end of the area adjacent to the railway. The two storey commercial building at 1288 Hay Street that addresses the corner of Outram Street was built in 1908. The post office directory first lists the building in 1909, and the occupant was Edgar Woodbridge, grocer and wine and spirit merchant. Woodbridge had held a liquor licence prior to this in Subiaco. Historically, the shop owner's residence would have been on the upper floor. The two adjacent tenancies on Hay Street (Nos. 1284 -1286) have been various businesses over the years but the corner tenancy (No. 1288) may have been a liquor and wine merchants continuously since 1909. A random selection of post office directory listings for No. 1288 Hay Street is as follows:1910: John Cowell, grocer and wine and spirit merchant1918: E. Veitch, grocer and wine and spirit merchant1924: William Owen, grocer and wine merchant1928: William Owen, grocer and wine merchant1930: James Bowdler, grocer and wine and spirit merchant1935: James Bowdler, grocer and wine and spirit merchant1942: Ernest W. Meredith, grocer and wine and spirit merchant1949: Ernest W. Meredith, grocer and wine and spirit merchant. A photo held at the State Library of WA dated 1983 shows the place was Gangemi’s Supermarket and Hallmark Cellars. At this time the corner entrance was closed off. At 2022, the place is Gangemi’s ‘Fine Wines and Food.’ The company, according to its Facebook page, was established in 1911. This date refers to the issue of the liquor licence, as thought by the proprietors. The two-storey commercial building has a corner pediment with label mould, and decorative battlement parapets on each street elevation. The parapet adjoins Nos. 1284 and 1286, but the three shops are on separate lots under separate ownership. The current tenant at 2022 advised that the owner of the corner shop is Joan Gangemi, who was born in the building.
High level of integrity. High level of authenticity. Has lost original detail at ground floorlevel but intact above.
Very Good
