Statement of Significance

Girls’ School (former) has aesthetic significance, and is a distinctive example of a building constructed in the 1870s. It has historic and social significance as an important educational institution in the Northam district. It forms part of the historic Wellington Street precinct and contributes to the streetscape and character of Northam.

Physical Description

Constructed in 1877, this early building stands in Wellington Street, originally the main street of Northam. In 1896 the original two roomed ] building was extended to include the verandas, which are a feature of the present building. The roof is steeply pitched and the veranda is under a separate roof. A distinctive ornamental gable is attached to the front of the building.
