Physical Description

The natural rock catchment area was dammed across a gully, the rock catchment drains cover an area of 140 acres of rock.

History

Initial moves were made in 1929 to establish a dam in the Glenelg Hills, however although the water was vital, the cost of the proposed rates resulted in the local framers petitioning against the dam. During the depression the site was surveyed, but no work took place. After many years, the dam was finally budgeted in the 1970/71 State budget at an estimated cost of $110,000. The 20 million gallon capacity dam finally cost $240,000. The Mt Roe Key Dam was officially opened on 8 October 1971 by the minister for Works and Water Supplies, CT Jamieson. a luncheon for 90 guests was held at the Narembeen Club prior to the opening, the opening was incorporated in the Celebrations for the centenary of local Government in Western Australia. The Minister for Local Government presented 400 local school children with a memorial token. Glenelg Hills is the site of the 12th Roe camp, and Glenelg is named after Roe's family home in Scotland. A gravity stand pipe was installed for the farmers, the area is a popular picnic spot.
