Physical Description

Recreation facility which was rebuilt in 1980 following the devastating earthquake in 1979.

History

In 1929, a sports meeting at Doherty's Soak resulted in choosing a site for the Cadoux Recreation Ground. The Progress Association paid to have the site cleared, and the Football and Cricket Clubs donated funds for the purpose. Sports Club The former Sports Club on this reserve was the Spotting Post for the VDC (Volunteer Defence Corps) during World War Two. The change rooms were "manned" 24 hours a day. Ladies were on duty from 8am to 6pm, and the men from 6pm to 8am. The duty was to listen and spot enemy aircraft, the phone was connected, and charts were available to identify the planes. In 1967, the Cadoux Bridge club reformed but after only one season at the Sports Pavilion, met at private homes. When the Club ceased in 1974, they donated their funds to Telethon. The building had recently been refurbished prior to the June 1979 earthquake, after losing the roof when cyclone Hazel hit in March 1979. Tennis Club Before the Cadoux Tennis Club was formed in 1930, tennis was played regularly at the Mincherton's. Two anthill courts and a bough shed were established at a site in the vicinity of the pavilion, and served the district until post World War Two when 3 new courts were built, and later another 3 were added. Golf Club On 29 March 1955, Ken Vincent convened a meeting with the intention of establishing a golf club. Land on the east side of the siding was available for lease, and was subsequently taken up. The first season began on 8 May 1955, with a nine hole course, fixtures and rules in place. a "Golf Club Ball" at the Hall raised funds for a club house. By June 1955, moves were underway for a further 9 holes, and the total 18 holes was opened in April 1956. By October 1957, the sports pavilion was extended and the golf course layout altered to respond. In 1959, the Golf Club made the commitment for the pavilion to be the Golf Club, and more alterations were made to the course. In 1962, the first open event was held with Kevan Vincent donating the trophy. By 1965, it was known as the "Vincent Trophy". After he passed away in 1965, the Kevan Clarke Memorial Shield was introduced to honour his memory. After the devastating earthquake on 2 June 1979, and subsequent rebuild of the Sports pavilion, the Golf Club still operates from the place. On the 10 June 1979, the Cadoux Earthquake Classic prize was 100 cement bricks and 100 roof tiles, donated by farmers whose homes were demolished. Football Club The Cadoux Football Club was formed and on 28 April 1929, the first football ground was cleared on the south east corner of the Recreation Reserve. In 1935, the club joined the Koorda Association. Through the war, football was discontinued, and the association reformed in 1947. In 1967, the Cadoux Football Club joined the Goomalling association, but by 1968, they disbanded due to lack of support. Cricket Club In 1929, the Cricket Club was formed, but went into recess for the war. After the war, there was one team called Cadoux-Manmanning. Then Manmanning formed their own team and Cadoux were called the 'Federals'. Both teams played in the Wongan Association. After a short time, Manmanning folded, and Cadoux 'Federals' continued as 'Cadoux'. Money for the cricket pitch was raised by raffling a concrete shed floor in 1978. Community Recreation Centre As a result of a devastating earthquake that rocked Cadoux in 1979, it was necessary to construct a new recreation facility for the community.
