Importance of house is its historical association and general shape rather thn its materials. Other examples of this type and age of building exist in Broome and are being well maintained (eg Male House). Garden magnificent for its mature trees, vines and general growth. Planted by the original owner. No possible use other than residential.
Construction: Typical early north west building. Concrete piles. Timber floors and wall framing. Wall sheeting of corrugated iron externally. Boarded walls and ceiling. Roof of corrugated iron. Layout: Two single rooms approx. 20 x 12 and 12 x 12 in-line with wide verandah all round. Storm shutters completely enclose the verandah. Two small buildings of timber and iron construction linked to main building by covered ways. Condition: white ants in floors and internal linings. Considerable rotting of timbers, particularly at ends. Shutters twisted and falling apart. House generally neglected and considerably overgrown. Possible to restorebut extensive new materials would be necessary. Contents: House has been stripped of all furniture fittings, handles etcs. Nothing but a bare shell exists.
Assessed June 1975: The first section of the house designed by Gora Kitchi, the Japanese architect, erected in 1900 by Capt. Biddles. The second section was added in 1918 by Danieal McDaniel deceased husband of present owner. First section comprises lounge room and bedrooms with spacious dining alcove, office. Construction is timber frame with corrugated iron walls and flat metal storm shutters around verandahs. Typical north west spacious residence. Use has always been for private purposes except occupied as officers quarters and mess by army from 1942 to 1947. It is sheltered from the road by a well developed stand of mango trees. Is now used for rented accommodation and is in very poor condition.
