Statement of Significance

The William Street jetty has historic significance given its connection to the development of sea transport in Port Denison and the other jetties (Place No. 82 and Place No. 84). It is closely associated with the Fisherman's Hall fmr. Bond Store (Place No.70 ). Recommendation Advice be sought to stabilise the structure, as far as possible.

Physical Description

1996 All that remains of this jetty are some pylons and cross members. The jetty is located inside the fishing boat harbour to the west of the former Bond Store (Fisherman’s Hall). Timber pegs which were used to hold the timbers together are still visible. 2004 The condition of the pylons continues to deteriorate.

History

Ben Mason was the contractor for the erection of the main jetty at Port Irwin (Denison) and this was gazetted on 29 January 1867, for a price of £1,350. Additional alterations and additions were made in the following years; 10/3/1868 for alterations by Ben Mason and extensions for £208 22/3/1870; Robert Cousins to affix whaling pieces to Irwin jetty £22; 30/6/1874 W. & S. Moore for repairs to the jetty £88. On the 6/8/1887 Mr Crowther MLA called for extensions to the jetty to allow steam ships to call and on the 25/8/1887 J. J. Grant made extensions to the jetty. In 1890 R. Law was paid £288 for repairs to the jetty. When the Bond Store (Place No 70).was built in 1894, a railway line connected it to this jetty. The jetty fell into disrepair and was finally dismantled during the World War II in case of invasion by the Japanese. (Sources: Bruce Baskerville, Government Gazette, IDHS Records)
