Statement of Significance

The Mainland Ruins have some historic significance for their association with early mining in the Cue district.

Physical Description

The Mainland Ruins consists of various stone ruins, foundations and mine workings. The building remains are made of dry stone walling and most are unroofed. Once small stone dwelling retains part of a corrugated iron roof, with stone laid over the sheeting. Some cottages have stone bunks beds, stone recess shelves, and fireplaces.

History

Mining occurred here between 1897 and 1914 with approximately 38,000 ozs of gold being recovered. Discovered by J. Maher, a small settlement was established in the vicinity. [Sue Rogerson]
