Statement of Significance

The kilns are of exceptional significance in demosnstrating the development of the lime industry with agricultural and industrial uses of a locally found and treated product in rural Western Australia.

Physical Description

Circular kilns to a depth of several metre. Some edge walls have caved in. Near-by are the excavation sites where the limestone was removed and burned in the kilns.

History

Lime kilns burnet the lime which was excavated from an area in close proximity tot hte kilns. The kilns were stacked with alternat layers of timber and limestone to burn properly with chimney up. The lime was bagged on site and used as a wash on the houses, other building uses, and in agricutlure for sweetening the sour swamp lands. Lime kilns were in the Stilring Estate up to c.1900 before Layman bought it, althoughthe Government bought it back within two years and introduce Tuart restrictions. Lime kilns were in the forest which became the Forestry block of State Forest No. 1 from 1918. The kilns were last used by farmers in the 1920's.
