The site of the former Roman Catholic Church and cemetery located on "Gum Tree Hill", East Dongara, have historic significance given their connection to Father Lecaille and the establishment of the Catholic Church in the district.
The site is bounded by Brand Highway to the north, the Eneabba railway line to the west and private property to the east and south.
In 1872, Father Lecaille built a small bat-brick church with a thatched roof and a small cemetery on "Gum Tree Hill" at the east end of Dongara. This was used till 1885 when the small stone presbytery in Waldeck Street was built by him. The first church later became home to the Ventura family and the place became known as Ventura’s Hill. The cemetery was inadvertently excavated during the building of the Eneabba rail line in about 1975. The pioneer remains were subsequently re-interred in the Dongara Cemetery with an appropriate memorial. (Source: Bain, M.A., "Ancient Landmarks", UWA Press, Perth, 1975)
