Statement of Significance

The place is an attractive urban park characterised by large expanses of lawn edged with mature eucalypt trees. The place is associated with the Gwynne family, early residents of the area. The place is valued by the community as a public park and as a venue for sporting and social events.

Physical Description

The place comprises a public recreational reserve located in a largely residential area, in the block bounded by Seventh Road, Forrest Road and Townley Street in Armadale. The oval is grassed, with fixtures for a number of sports including football goalposts, netball/basketball courts and cricket nets, as well as various storage sheds. The perimeter of the reserve is edged with eucalypt trees, including a row of impressive trees along Millman Way, a roadway through the reserve that provides access to the Bowling Club and Recreation Centre.

History

This sports ground was previously known as the "Old Rec", and had been used for sport and recreation since the early 20th Century. During the years of World War One, sports carnivals were held here to raise funds for troop comforts. At these events members of the crowd also launched frenzied attacks with sticks on an effigy of 'Kaiser Bill'. The 'Old Rec' was later renamed in honour of the Gwynne family, early residents of the area. In 1950, the oval at this site was upgraded, and, in 1979, the Gwynne Park Recreation and Sporting Centre was established at this location.
