Statement of Significance

The building makes a contribution to the streetscape of Hannan Street in its prominent location at the street alignment with its heavy masonry shell and its classical form.

Physical Description

An imposing two-storey building. The exterior walls of the building extend beyond the roof line to a balustraded parapet across the facade. The facade is modelled with pilasters that divide the facade into three bays. Openings are semi-circular fanlights with moulded surrounds and pronounced keystones. They are connected at their springing point by pilasters. The building features marble tiled floors and stucco facings (Laurie, 1995: 21). The automatic teller machines and the metal verandah awning are recent additions.

History

The building was established as the union bank, and has been used continuously as a bank. The Union Bank was one of the most powerful banks operating in Western Australia and had interests in the pastoral industry (Webb, 1993: 291).
