Statement of Significance

The place is of historical significance being the last of several mines in the Leonora district. The lease was pegged in May 1896 but it was not until November 1896 that the new mine received its Welsh name from the new owner. The mine has association with prominent persons. The first supervisor of the mine was Herbert Hoover, later to become President of the USA. The Sons of Gwalia was the largest goldmine outside the Golden Mile being of social and economic signifiance to the town and to Western Australia.

Physical Description

Headframe constructed of oregon timber, some major pieces measuring 60 ft x 12 in x 12 in. Winder was last operating steam winder in WA, working until 1963 and was one of the largest of its kind in Australia.
