This single storey brick, iron and timber bungalow, in a plain version of the Federation Queen Anne style, has cultural significancebecause: it has closeassociations with Alfred Canning, surveyor, explorer and founder of the iconic Canning Stock Route; it is part of a cultural group and a townscape area.
The place is a stripped variant of the Federation Queen Anne style with plain details and little apparent interest in the visual delight often associated with the style.
The place was the home of A.W Canning, eponymous surveyor of the Canning Stock Route. The route was developed to aid the movement of cattle from the Kimberley (Halls Creek) to the southern Goldfields (Wiluna). As was often the case with early European routes it incorporated many aboriginal sites. Canning's expedition left Day Dawn on 7 May 1906. It arrived at Halls Creek on 29 March 1906. The return journey with cattle began in February 1907 and Canning and his party were given a civic welcome by Premier Forrest on their return on 20 July 1907. Canning left again on a well-sinking expedition along the route in 1908, returning two decades later to reconditionthe wells in 1930 at the age of 70. Canning owned (and sometimes occupied) 19 Leake Street between c.l900 and c.l920125. Considerable historical significance.
A straightforward and plain version of the style, retaining a medium level of integrity. Loss of decorative detail, painted brickwork.
