Statement of Significance

It is a typical homestead of the period, historically important as one of the few remaining substantial dwellings in this area of Melville and for its association with the Bateman's, pioneers in this district as well as in Fremantle. It is held in high esteem by the City of Melville.

History

Assessment 1997 Construction: 1886 Built by John Bateman who acquired the 514 hectare grant in 1886 and originally used as a holiday house. Grasmere became a permanent home for the next generation of Bateman family who farmed the property. The house and 2.13 hectares of land remaining after subdivision is still in Bateman ownership and occupation. Attractively situated on a rise overlooking the head of Bull Creek, with tall pines between it and Pulo Road, The well-preserved brick house is surrounded by verandahs, with its original corrugated iron roof.
