Statement of Significance

'Karingal' homestead has local historic significance given its connection with the builder E. C. 'Clive' Hunter . Further the place is representative of the style and use of materials of houses built by E.C. Hunter.

Physical Description

A large house of impressed concrete block construction with a tiled roof. Windows are timber framed and double hung. There are concrete lintels above the window and door openings. A verandah to the front [south] aspect is supported on decorative concrete posts. There is a garage and workshop of similar construction at the rear.

History

Built and designed by E. C. 'Clive' Hunter for himself and from which he operated his building business. He constructed many of the houses in the district and also built the Masonic Lodge and RSL Hall. The concrete blocks used in these buildings were made on this site. Prior to this, bricks were made at the old school site in Brysta Street, and Clive Hunter lived at Chapman's house (currently owned by M & K Bothe). 'Karingal' means 'Happy Meeting Place'.
