Statement of Significance

Roebourne Hospital Group was the earliest hospital to be constructed in the north west region of the state. It was the second public hospital to be constructed in Western Australia.

Physical Description

The group includes: Roebourne Hospital (1887), Kitchen Block (1889), Former Quarters (1889), as well as site of original hospital (1874, demolished c.1885) and associated modern hospital structures.

History

Established in 1874, the hospital at Roebourne was the second public hospital to be built in WA, and the earliest to be constructed in the north west of the State.

Condition

The first hospital for Roebourne, a wooden building with attached surgery was built to plans drawn by R R Jewell in 1874, another ward being added in 1879. Plans for the present hospital were drawn in the PWD in 1886 and signed by G T Poole. The building was finished and occupied in June 1887. It was built by Bunning Bros of stone at a cost of 2679 pounds. A kitchen, closets and outbuildings were added 1889-90 to plans again signed by G T Poole in 1889 - the kitchen, cook's house and store being shown. A plan of the site signed by W L Owen 31/8/89 shows in addition to the buildings mentioned above, quarters for the medical officer, with detached kitchen and outhouses, the old hospital with its kitchen, stables and cow yard.
