The place is an example of a stone residence representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Single storey brick façade and stone with brick quoining sides attached pair with a zincalume gabled roof which has decorative timberwork and chimneys with corbelling (no 43 has two chimneys & no 41 has one chimney).
East Street was the original eastern boundary of the Fremantle townsite. In 1902/03 two cottages were erected for John McMillan. The first occupants were William Watson, a chemist and Robert Bustorff, a commercial traveller.
