· The place is an excellent example of a Late 20th Century Late Modern architectural style office Building. · The place contributes to the streetscape of St Georges Terrace and the townscape of the City of Perth. · The place is significant for its innovative architectural design, which has won 4 prominent awards (see Documentary evidence).
‘The award winning Allendale Square (1977), situated in the premier office/commercial precinct of the Perth CBD, was amongst the first high-rise buildings to be constructed in Western Australia. Allendale square’s significance was recognised by the awards it received; 1997 Alcoa Award, 1978 ACI Energy Conservation Award; 1978 RAIA Design Award and the 1981 RAIA Bronze Award.’ ‘The WA Design Award Jury made the following comments, ‘The basic design is innovative and displays both structural and technological sophistication. The tower and its associated concourse exhibit clarity of though, consistent detailing and finishes of a high standard.’ ‘Cameron Chisholm & Nicol won a limited competition in 1997 to undertake master planning for the site and to design a staged refurbishment of the tower, plaza level low rise and retail. ‘Stage 1 of this refurbishment consisted of new typical floors, lift lobbies, toilets and tea prep areas. The St George's Terrace ground floor lobby received a new entrance canopy, reception counter, lifts, and finishes throughout.’ ‘Stage 2 of this refurbishment is currently under construction. This has included the redesign of surrounding low-rise buildings and the replacement of the canopy between with a new lightweight stainless steel space frame.’ ‘The design and selection of materials and finishes have produced clean simple lines which reflect the original building concept.’
