Statement of Significance

House, 35 Adelaide Street (1911), demolished 1969, is significant as a site because it was the home of prominent fremantle merchant, Geoge Healy, and family. It has historic significance as being the last remaining residence on the street before its demolition. It represents an earlier time when residential, and not commercial, buildings, dominated Adelaide Street.

History

Adelaide St is one of the earliest streets of Fremantle, appearing in the 1833 survey. It is named for Queen Adelaide, consort of William IV. House, 35 Adelaide Street first appears in the rate books for the period of 1911/12 and was owned and occupied by Ethel Constance Healy and George L. Healy, the original State Shipping superintendent. The Healy family still owned and lived in the house in 1934/35. Healey's daughter Mrs M.H. Curedale then lived in the place most of her life before selling it to Mr J.E. Hardie. The house was originally number 74 but changed in the 1934/35 rate period, and is Part 3 of Lot 566. The house was a two-storey stone residence with brick quoining. Undated photograph (c1960s) shows ground floor sunk below pavement level about 1-2 feet, and a concrete entrance feature of stairs accesses the first floor verandah from the pavement.ThefFirst floor verandah runs the length of the building, a skillion profile under the main pitch of the hipped roof.
