Significant for the associations with the pioneers of the district, and a community recreation demonstrating a way of life no longer practised.
The sportsground situated in the town reserve was fenced by the early settlers. The sports days were a great success. The various events prize monies were advertised in the local paper. The most important event was the Sheffield Handicap where prospective entrants had to submit a summary of the past two years performance for handicap purposes. A sports day was completed by a dance in the nearby Doodenanning Hall.
