Statement of Significance

The site is significant due to its association with postal & telephone communications and also for its linkage with pioneering families.

Physical Description

The building is a long narrow structure which faces Robinson Road, opposite the Hall and Shire buildings. It had a dual purpose being a post office and telephone exchange with separate ends of the building used for these specific purposes. (Western end postal, eastern section telephone).

History

Previously the post office was located in the stone building situated north of the hotel on Burt Road. To accommodate the required facilities for existing postal and expanding telephone series a new building was required. These services were managed from the house between the new building and Richardson's & Co store. It had a succession of owners/operators including the Spencer, Houston, Chamberlain and White families. The latter (Murray White) also operated the school bus run (to Katanning in Cartmeticup) and the mail run.
