1. Matron's House - is a neat, small building, with wooden boards for walIs. Inside it is panelled with more modem material of the 1950s but the windows, doors and fittings remain of the 1920s period. 2. Hospital Building - This is a larger timber building. The original locks and brass door handles remain on the windows, small panes, and french doors. The roofis corrugated iron and inside the building the jarrah floor boards are in very good condition. The verandah is supported by the original beams which are in good order.
The two buildings were once tile the second hospital in Esperance, requested by locals. They have seen tile births and deaths of many local families. The hospital was run by the Australian Inland Mission until 1938. The buildings were moved from the Peel estate (Wellard Townsite) to Esperance on the SS Kybra in 1929. The hospital was officially opened in January 1930 by Mr Munsie, Minister of Health, after additional buildings had been completed. Mrs Campbell was the first Matron and others have included Matrons Brady, Mills, Nully, Frear, Fraser. and Baxter (who was allowed to live in the house until 1971).
Integrity: Only the exteriors retain the character although the doors and windows are original. Modifications: Roof now asbestos. Shop entry changed. Tearooms outside little has changed.
Shop- very poor inside. Tearooms- clean and neat
