Physical Description

A number of brick and tile buildings occupy the site.

History

The hospital opened on October 1925. A foundation stone laid by Senator Hugh de Largie on 28 January 1925, paid tribute to Alexander Rankin. The Roads Board paid a subsidy to assist in retaining a doctor in the town. The Hospital relied on public and private donations and community effort to keep it open. Hospital Balls, dances, sports days etc. assisted in raising the funds. In January 1927, a separate wheat stack was made at the siding, with 1 in 400 bags being donated to the hospital. Before the hospital was completed, Dr Margaret Clarke form Lake Grace, stayed at the hotel, and held consultations at that place. Dr Tepper was the first resident doctor followed by Dr Walters in 1927. A hospital committee was formed in 1927, and in 1928 a scheme was introduced to cover hospital expenses. In 1937 new nurses quarters were built. In 1965, extensive additions were.constructed at the hospital during the time that AA Smoker was Chairman of the Shire Council. The extensions included an administration wing, amenities, and operating theatre, and the former office and amenities area was converted to wards, at a cost of £37,000. The nurses Quarters have been converted into a Frail Aged Lodge.
