Statement of Significance

The place has significant associations with the Sticklands, an early pioneering family in the district.

History

Edward Stickland and his son Willie took up land 5 miles east of the Wongan Hills in 1905. By 1907, Edward was agitating for a railway north from Goomalling. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Wongan Hills School in 1913, and officially opened it. Mrs Mary Stickland was known as "Grand old lady" or "gran". Willie( WH) and his wife Emma established "Yallaling" and his son William Edwin has carried on the tradition, also taking over his uncle Otto Ganzer's property. Willie Stickland was the secretary of the first progress association, secretary of the Primary Producers Association, President of the Agricultural Society, and the Co-op.
