Statement of Significance

It was one of only eight stations built to the standard design-. It is representative of its type and period in rural Western Australia. It contributes to the streetscape and character of the town of Lake Grace and is a landmark building significant for its identifiable associations with the raiIway. It is an integral part of the railway precinct.

Physical Description

Timber framed and weatherboard clad with a gable roof tiled with clay terracotta tiles.

History

On 19 June 1916, the railway from Wagin to Lake Grace. That year the townsite of Lake Grace was declared. A staff cabin and waiting shelter were in place at Lake Grace Station in the early 1920s. In 1924, plans for a new railway station and goods shed were drawn in advance of the line being extended eastwards to Newdegate in 1926. Lake Grace became a junction in 1933 when the line northwards to Hyden opened. In 1974 a crew room and toilet facilities were added to the railway station building. On 24 July 1987 the railway station closed. In 1993, the Lake Grace Railway Preservation Committee planned for the future of the place, securing Lotteries funding for a conservation plans, and subsequent conservation works.
