The historic and scientific value lies in its age, setting and architectural features. It is a good example of an early government post office building style. Aesthetically it is a very appealing and comfortable style of architecture and is in its original form with only a few minor internal alterations. It has heritage value owing to its integral ties to the historic port and the central role the building played for the community. As the tourist bureau, it still has plays an important role in the district.
The Old Post Office, now fully functional as a tourist bureau, is approximately 100 years old. It is constructed in a typical government post office style of that period. It features horizontal timber slatting, upper wall and ceiling air vents, high ceilings and timber flooring. Located in the historic port precinct, the old post office forms an integral part of the whole port. The building itself is an attraction to visitors and adds to the general architectural theme of the port area.
