Statement of Significance

Duplex , 10 - 12 Lefroy Road, is a typical rendered brick and iron single storey duplex pair dating from 1899.The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of South Fremantle. Historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the South Fremantle area. The place is a late simple example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

An attached duplex pair of single storey rendered masonry and iron houses. House no. 10 is set back from house no 12. Roofs are hipped corrugated iron. There are no verandahs. The walls are rendered masonry. Each house has a single front door and timber framed windows either side to the front elevation. There is a rendered masonry and timber picket fence to the front boundaries partially obscuring views to the houses.

History

Lefroy Road forms the northern boundary of the Lefroy Estate, which extended as far south at Lloyd Street. H Maxwell Lefroy was Comptroller (Superintendent) of the Fremantle Prison from 1859-1876. The portion of the street between South Terrace and Attfield Street was previously called Trinity Street (1908/09), then Sinclair St (1909/10). In 1890/91, a two roomed cottage was built on this lot for pensioner, Thomas Stewart. At this time, the street was unnamed. In 1895, the cottage was described as comprising three rooms and was owned by Eliza Stewart (Thomas’ wife) and occupied by William Dixon, a clerk. By 1898, the cottage had been expanded to comprise four rooms and Eliza and Thomas Stewart were in residence. In 1897, the cottage was occupied by customs officer Wilfred Woodcock. The Stewarts were back in residence in 1899, when two cottages were listed on the lot. A diagram dated c. 1905 shows stone cottages at 10 and 12 Lefroy Road. The two cottages shared a common wall. In 1920/21, the cottages were owned by George Stewart and occupied by Eliza Stewart (10 Lefroy Road) and Angelina Hoddy. In 1930/31, Samuel Stiles and Alfred Curedale were the occupants. In 1935/36, the cottages were owned by W A Folwer Investments. John Wylie lived in No. 10 while No. 12 was unoccupied at this time. Ellen Burrowes was listed at the owner in 1940/41 and Mr Yates in 1951/52. This place was included in the "Heritage Study South Fremantle", prepared by John Taylor Architects, for the City of Fremantle, June 1993. It was also included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - BROWN -significant for making a positive contribution to the built environment of Fremantle.
