Formerly, the group of simple dwellings had historical value as they demonstrate the large workforce needed at the Yarloop mill during the early 20th century. Formerly, the group had value as a rare collection of single men’s quarters that are in their original form and location. Formerly, the group had social value as a demonstration of the type of simple accommodation provided for single men. Formerly, the place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the Yarloop heritage area.
Simple and small timber frame and weatherboard cottages built on timber stumped footings. The structures are asymmetric in plan form. The roofs are gabled in form with shallow pitches and clad in corrugated galvanised iron painted alternatively in green and red. Windows are metal framed with casement openings and louvers. Destroyed by January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire.
These single men's residences were built for workers who were constructing the South West railway line in the 1890s. Their basic form and facilities are indicative of the standards of the day for working men. Some of the huts are still in use today [2014] for accommodation. This building was burnt down by the January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire. The Chimneys was left standing however has were deemed structurally unsound and was subsequently removed.
