Statement of Significance

The Sugar Gums, particularly the specimen adjoining the tourist lay-by, are a feature of the town and have social significance. The historical significance of the trees is at this stage unknown.

Physical Description

E. ciaaocaiyx occurs naturally in South Australia. Many have been planted in. WA because they are a large drought resistant tree, with a high tolerance to local pests. The largest specimen in the town stands near a telephone box beside a tourist lay-by, between the Station Museum and the Water Tower. This is the tallest tree in Merredin and is readily noticeable on the horizon when approaching the town. Other smaller specimens are to be found opposite the Station Museum and around the western rail crossing.
