Statement of Significance

Wittecarra Spring/Gully has historic significance as a site of early European exploration and interaction with the Aboriginal people of the region.

Physical Description

The area has historic interest due to it being possibly one of the first landing sites of early European explorers to Australia. The area has historic interest due to the interaction between local Aboriginals and Lieutenant George Grey on his walk to the Swan River Colony following the wrecking of his ship in Gantheaume Bay in 1839. The area has been considered as a possibly suitable site for the development of a marina in conjunction with the adjacent Brownes Farm/Port Kalbarri project. Council resolved to nominate Wittecarra Gully and Spring for consideration by the Heritage Council of WA for listing on the State Register of Heritage Places at its January 1999 meeting (Minute 1.12.8). The Wittecarra Gully and Spring area were included on the Municipal Heritage Inventory in March 1999 at the request of Council.
