Statement of Significance

This place contains a limestone feature. Limestone walls were built around properties in Fremantle to prevent sand drift in response to an early building regulation dating from the 1830s. The use of limestone is part of the Fremantle landscape and gives the City coherence and character. It is not known how old this particular wall is. This place was identified in the "Heritage Report on 19th century limestone walls and steps in Fremantle" prepared by Silvana Grassadonia, for the City of Fremantle, 1986.

Charles Street was largely developed in the last decade of the nineteenth century and much of the housing stock still dates from this time. 28 Charles Street contains a limestone feature. Limestone walls were built around properties in Fremantle to prevent sand drift in response to an early building regulation dating from the 1830s. The use of limestone is part of the Fremantle landscape and gives the City coherence and character. It is not known how old this particular wall is. This place was identified in the "Heritage Report on 19th century limestone walls and steps in Fremantle" prepared by Silvana Grassadonia, for the City of Fremantle, 1986. A house was built on the lot c. 1896 for Walter Frew. Walter and Catherine Frew lived in the house until c. 1920, when it was bought by Clare Coronel. The Frews also owned the house next door at 26 Charles Street. Ms Coronel bought both properties from the Frews. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a brick building with a full length front verandah. There were two rooms attached to the rear of the house, one of weatherboard and the other of galvanised iron. At some stage, this house was demolished.
