Statement of Significance

The building, with its dark brick walls and stucco ornamentation constructed in the modified Art Deco style has distinctive architectural character. It is historically important through its former use as a hotel and for the part it played in the history of the Loreto order. As part of a complex the building also has environmental importance.

Physical Description

The buildings are constructed in dark brick with stucco decoration and terra cotta tiled roof in modified Art Deco style. The convent building now serves as administration offices for John XXIII College

History

Assessment 1981(Chapel & Admin building) Constructed 1938 Architect: Reginald Summerhayes The Osborne Hotel (1897 - 1964) originally occupied the site. In 1901 the Loreto nuns established a school for girls and a convent in the hotel building. Later in 1938 a new convent, chapel and classroom building complex was constructed. (building later demolished)
