The place has aesthetic and historic significance as an example of a rendered masonry house in central Fremantle constructed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and representing the typical living conditions of the townspeople at that period. The place contributes to the substantially intact Hampton Road streetscape. The building is not highly intact and recent fabric is not significant
Single storey rendered stone residence with a terracotta tiled hipped and gabled roof and chimney with corbelling, set closer to the pavement than nearby residences. The front half timbered gable, veranda and in filled rooms are probably not original, there is ashlar effect quoining behind the veranda on the (probably original) façade. The front entrance has stained glass light fanlights and sidelights. The building shows evidence of extensive alterations from the original but retains original form.
Hampton Road was originally called Prison Road. It derives its name from John Stephen Hampton (1810-1869), the Governor of WA from 1862-68. He was previously Comptroller of Convicts in Tasmania. His son, G. E. Hampton, was Acting Comptroller-General of the Fremantle Convict Establishment. Lot 1 of 821. From 1884 the house on the front block was owned by George Law, mason. The back house was owned by Thomas Law, mason.
